Behind The Lense
Having grown up surrounded by the incredible landscapes of the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, I've always been passionate about their pristine beauty. However, it's only been in recent years that I've come to see these landscapes as more than just visually stunning backdrops. They are living, breathing entities, each with their own unique stories. I've developed a profound appreciation for the depth and complexity of these places. Ever increasingly becoming more and more passionate about uncovering their hidden histories, exploring the narratives woven into their fabric, and understanding the ways in which people have interacted with and shaped these landscapes over time.
My journey has led me to a deep desire to dive into the depths of our collective past, and to share the treasures I uncover with others, while also imagining the future of our landscapes; places that go beyond just static scenes to be admired from afar, becoming dynamic spaces where people are active participants within.
Exploring the Landscape
I envision landscape, people, and architecture as inseparable elements, each contributing to a unified whole rather than one dominating over the other. Unearth expresses this vision, merging my passion for landscape photography with my pursuit of architecture. It serves as a platform where I seek to not only explore but also celebrate the natural beauty and architectural potential of Aotearoa’s Backcountry. My passion for landscape photography seamlessly aligns with my ambition to design within the remote regions of our country, allowing me to coherently integrate my creative passions and professional aspirations.
Rethinking People and Landscape
Currently pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the Dunedin School of Architecture, I invite you to join me on the path of my thesis adventure. Although its title remains undefined, my thesis seeks to reevaluate the relationship between people and landscape, using architecture as a mediator to create a symbiotic relationship. Using Unearth as a platform to document this journey, this endeavour involves delving into our collective history, understanding the present, while always looking to the future.
The name ‘unearth’ came from a similar approach to that of the band called ‘Unearth.’ The name was coined by drummer Mike Rudberg as he wanted the band to "Unearth" a new sound in the metal and hardcore world. Similar to the band's mission to "Unearth" a new sound, I embark on an adventure to redefine how we perceive and interact with our landscapes. I envision landscape, people, and architecture as integral components, each complementing the others to form a cohesive whole.
As I explore both the natural landscapes and backcountry architecture, I invite you to follow me on this journey. Join me on Instagram and Facebook, and explore the adventure blogs found on the top tab of the website.
