Filluel Street

The Filluel Street project is an intergenerational community hub situated in ÅŒtepoti Dunedin. Its primary purpose is to offer affordable retiree communal housing while also serving as a lively and inclusive space for individuals of all age groups. The project aims to foster connection, preserve culture, and instill a sense of belonging by creating a cohesive environment. An essential aspect of the Whare O Pio Reanga project is the provision of retiree housing within the community hub.

This unique approach not only provides cost-effective communal housing for an often-overlooked age group but also encourages intergenerational interaction. It promotes the exchange of experiences and knowledge between different generations, resulting in many physical and mental health benefits for all ages. By bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, the project strives to create a supportive and inclusive environment that values the contributions of every person.

The retiree housing units are located on the first floor, ensuring a level of privacy for the residents. Each unit measures 50m2 and includes a bedroom, bathroom, small kitchenette, and living space. The smaller size of these units aims to make the more spacious communal kitchen and living area more inviting for the residents to use and socialize. Additionally, shared gardens, laundry facilities, and storage spaces are available.

At the heart of the project lies the concept of a wharenui meeting house, which serves as both a symbolic and functional centrepiece. The structure is constructed using large macrocarpa timber and is adorned with a cloak that protects from the cold and wet conditions of ÅŒtepoti for both the building and its occupants. Blending traditional heritage with contemporary design, this structure offers a space for community gatherings, events, and cultural activities.

Furthermore, the project incorporates various spaces and facilities that cater to diverse community needs. These include communal areas for socializing and cultural activities, educational spaces, a cafe, and play areas for children. The design and amenities of the project are thoughtfully planned to accommodate the varied interests and requirements of different age groups, promoting a sense of community and enhancing overall well-being.

In summary, the Filluel Street project is an intergenerational community hub that celebrates cultural heritage, encourages connectivity between generations, and provides retiree housing within a vibrant and sustainable environment. By combining traditional elements with contemporary design, the project aims to create a place where individuals of all ages can flourish, learn, and experience a profound sense of belonging within a diverse and inclusive community.
