Project Central Otago Railway
Central Otago Railway
The Central Otago gold rush of the 1860s led a need for a railway line from Dunedin to Central Otago to be established. Construction of the line began in 1879 and reached Clyde in 1907. In its glory days the railway transported freight as well as carrying passengers. At the end of the gold rush, it mainly served as freight traffic for farming and during the construction of the Clyde dam. In 1990 the railway officially closed between Middlemarch and Clyde and was converted into the popular cycle trail. This photography project tells the story of the rail line through a series of the remanding stations and viaducts.
