Wetlands Community
The Market Reserve, located near the center of ÅŒtepoti, was historically marshland before European settlement, now serving as an open field with a playground. The Wetlands Community Project proposes restoring this area to its marshy state, utilizing natural processes to purify wastewater and control flooding while preserving a portion for public use, including a new playground. The project aims to foster unity and diversity, accommodating various demographics through a mix of housing options and communal facilities.

Nineteen homes, including individual and double-jointed dwellings, are integrated into the landscape, varying in size and design to promote personalization and identity. The homes, designed to passive house standards, prioritize efficiency and sustainability, incorporating features such as rainwater collection, insulation, natural ventilation, and solar panels.

Interaction and community engagement are emphasized through shared spaces, including carports, boardwalks, gardens, and communal living areas. Two main communal spaces facilitate socializing and collaboration among residents, reinforcing a sense of belonging and connection. Public access to certain areas maintains community integration while promoting engagement with the site's history.

The materiality of the homes reflects a vernacular approach, utilizing locally sourced materials such as cedar cladding, corrugated iron, and earth brick, chosen for both historical relevance and efficiency. Elevated foundations protect against flooding while minimizing environmental impact, with a focus on eco-friendly construction practices.

The centerpiece of the project is the market building, which serves as a hub for local businesses and community interaction. The building's design integrates with the surrounding context, featuring stalls, a food court, café, and apartments, enhancing the site's functionality and connection to the broader community.

The apartments cater to tourists, market vendors, and visitors, offering varying sizes and amenities for short or extended stays. Designed with gable roofs and ample natural light, the apartments contribute to the project's cohesion and practicality.

Overall, the Wetlands Community Project aims to create a vibrant, sustainable community that celebrates local heritage and fosters social cohesion. Through thoughtful design and integration of natural and built environments, the project provides a model for inclusive, environmentally conscious urban development.
